That night

The cold breeze woke me
My eyes wouldn't open
For the tears I've cried
Had dried around them

I couldn't go back to sleep
The hours pass by
Yet, I lay still in bed

My throat was parched.
I moved down the stony staircase gently
Almost slithering
Like a snake
Yet, every step made a piercing crack

Something inside me
Was warning me not to go back upstairs
Yet, I wouldn't listen to my heart
That has misled me all these years

I lay back in bed, I heard
Someone breathing hard
Water dripping down the carpet
Opened my eyes
But saw nothing
So I closed my eyes again

Those haunting noises surround me
Opened my eyes to face a horrible site

A woman dressed in white
From head to toe
Her pitch black hair
Covered her grotesque face

She whispered words
Like the wind,
So gravelly
I could not understand her

I blinked
And she was gone
Not knowing what to do next
I cried myself
Back to sleep
Once more
