You Were There

You Were There

You were there through the sadness, the guilt, the strife,
You affected and changed my entire life.
Your heart was so pure, your voice was so warm,
I remember your words as you lay on my arm.

Through dating, the break ups, too much heavy make up,
I was there on the phone when you wanted to stay up.
You stuck by 'till the end, like a true friend,
Friendship so rare, hard to comprehend.

Though my heart is a pretzel, you manage to find,
A way to get past the maze in my mind.
Best friends last forever, that's what they all say,
Even until your last dying day.

I wish to believe them, I wish it was true,
That was 'till the day I thought I lost you.
It was a normal day, much like any,
Except that you lost it, you ran away from me.

You cried and screamed as I wrestled the blade,
Whispered and stared as the scars seemed to fade.
Trapped in your room, lost under moonlight,
That day was the day you fought with your might.

I tried to stop you, I truly did,
I saw every scar, every razor blade skid.
I heard the pills popping as you took too many,
I lifted weights that were just too heavy.

I remember our secrets, our daily strife,
I chose to keep it, but you hated your life.
I don't know why, but it made me sad,
To know that you cried about mom and dad.

I tried to be there through the laughter and sorrow,
But I worry that you won't be here tomorrow.
You were there for everything, you listened to me,
Now it's my turn to be there for eternity.
