The Wishing Well

by Viola   Jun 17, 2007

I went one day
so long ago
upon a whishing well
where the waters flow
I got a coin in my hand
this coin so smooth
I rolled it around
as I made a simple wish
I just want sunshine
no more rain
is all I'm wishing for
I said
and threw the coin
up in the air
and watched it
go down below
making that ripple effect
as it hit the pure, clear water
and then I walked away
I found that day
in some miraculous way
that the sun shined
and the clouds cleared
and all we saw
was a bright warm day

well it was several years later
I grew up a little
and still I went
to that same well
had a coin upon my hand
held it out as I made a wish
and thought about it for a while
I wish for happiness
that's what I said
and once again
threw that gold coin
into the waters down below
watching it go
go down so deep
and as I walked away this time
I smiled at the people near
I saw somehow all the beauty of the world
like those roses that bloomed
the simple rainbow
after the rain
I saw the children smiling
as they played in the sand
the pureness of the sea
and the softness of the waves
and somehow I knew
I found my happiness

the years would continue to pass
and I grew to be
a lovely young woman
wore those pretty satin dresses
put the powder on my face
looked as great as ever
but there was something missing
I didn't feel complete
I needed one more thing
to fulfil my every dream
and right away
I knew what I had to do
I must go to that well
so it can make my wish come true
just as I did when I was a child
as I went there I took out
that small but perfect smooth coin
I held it out in my hand once more
this time I said
what I wish for
is love
only love, it's what I need
and threw the coin in to the waters
same as I always did before
I turned and walked away
and went on with my day

well days would pass
months even too
and I felt as lonely as ever
didn't think the well had worked
maybe it was just a childhood fantasy
it took me years to realise
that what the well had given me
was far more important than the rest
but it was me
who was so reluctant to see
that what the well had given me was you
and you were all I needed
because every thing I had ever asked for
is what you gave me
it was you
who gave me sunshine
and happiness too
it was you who gave me love
it took me long
but one day I realised
that the well made my dreams come true
simply by showing me you
and on that simple summer day
I realised something so true
that the best things in life
are those that are right in front of us
but we just simply do not see
I realised the best things in life
are free
like the love you gave me
