Why am I American?

by Richard Machado   Jul 19, 2007

I know all too well, America,
I was born to its soil. You see, but
This does not make me American.

I hate no one for what they love;
Thats why I am American.

I can vote for pessimistic optimists,
For all they believe, and all they say.
But, this cannot make me American.

I follow no set path;
For this, I am American!

Ive learned of its first president,
And all that he went through. Ha!
But, this does not make me American.

I am nobodies slave,
Thats why I am American.

I am strong and smart;
Weird and unique;
Friendly and caring;
Wise and attentive.

I am my own man,
But support my community;
For this, my friend, is why I am American!
