Secondhand Life

by Torrence   Sep 1, 2007

I heard your story
And I lost my breath
Captivated by the words
The delicate plot
The intricate twists
The glorious turns
All the ins and outs of you
And it wouldn't leave my mind
Just left me transfixed
On you, though you were nothing more than
A secondhand ghost

I saw your hand
Reaching out and saving them
As they walked on by
Never noticing as I did
Never stopping to realize
That their lives were forever altered
By your touch
And mine too, would never be the same
I remained changed, saved
By a secondhand angel

You got a rose and you smiled
You danced and you drank
And then midnight came
And you kissed and you left
And he left too
But the passion was real
You left that in that room
On the table and the dance floor
Intoxicating those you left behind
With nothing of their own
Except for secondhand love

I watch as the world turns
Constant and uncaring
Changing and embracing
I sit in awe
Never in the center
Except for in my mind
Content to waste my time
With this secondhand life
