The Darkest Feathers of Early-October

by Torrence   Oct 4, 2007

I was blinded by the light
Reflecting from the centers of your eyes
Those portals to the soul
That seemed to glow
I couldn't see past the glare
Of those wings
The purest of white
Hanging from your shoulder blades
I was distracted by the brightness
Of the halo hung about your head
That you assured me wasn't there
That anyone could see

It left spots in my eyes
Spots of darkness in my mind
Fuzzy memories mixed with dreams
Never knowing what was real
What I'd imagined

There was a brightness to that day
Unnatural glare
The sun was silent
Yet still it shone
And somewhere a harp,
Coming from you
A soundtrack to fantasy
To insanity
A bittersweet melody that only exists in the fevered dreams of the fool
Silenced with every wisp of clouds floating by

Nightmares haunt my sleep these days
Fractured memories of halos hung from bloody horns
A smile with no mirth
Only malice
A blinding light that reveals nothing
And hides the truth
These horrid visions of curses and hate
Following you
A tortured dirge ringing forth in the night
Blackened by a cascade of dark wings
Decayed, fake, tainted remains of a once pure sight
Falling from their once white perch
Upon the back of an angel
I never really knew.
