Mates

Mateship is the stuff of legend
formed in times of hardship
the bond that is shared by those
who are lucky enough
experience something special

Mateship is a bond powerful
loyalty, love, trust, compassion
not often is this experienced
this bond so powerful

in times of trial and pain
one only needs to look to their mates
they alone are always there
through thick and thin
no matter what, they stick by you

for when mateship was first experienced
it was during world war 1
in times of extreme hardship
when desertion was higher than the death toll
one man picked up his rifle
and fought by his friend's side

your mates for life
fight the good fight
standing ever stronger by your side
not leaving, not giving an inch
until the battle is won

if you fall during the fight
your mates will lift you up
they will place you firmly upon their shoulders
they will carry you through great danger
to make sure you emerge victorious
