To Autumn

To Autumn (Ode)

I drifted west under cool autumn breeze,
First signs of change my stem detached from tree.
Then under chestnut stares the air would freeze
And suspended there my colours broke free
Under charm "Drows'd with the fume of poppies".
Balanced in silence; broken by my screams
You were so definite in your colours.
You hung fragilely framed by sunlight beams.
Temperation changed and so did leaves
Through all my branches it spread like disease.
Did you hear migrating birds'n'bees murmur?

Now the wind spirals without direction
And the season circles without future
But if I fall is there no connection?
If my heart's seasonal I am unsure
For harvesting it is death's grim reaper.
Implosions of energy and colour
Stripped my leaves; now I am naked and bare.
I see now I was the silent sleeper
And you say through crisp air I'll discover
But there's many things that leaves can cover.
I've attached my roots to the chestnut stare.

Icy mists hide future blossoms and I
Cannot see if under frozen sheets they
Will last or rot. Loosing flight in grey skies
But I like swallows will still find my way,
And ghosts of slaughtered lambs will follow me
If I skate smoothly over your surface.
Sweet cider comes from apple's rotting stew.
If my heart melts through its ice I'll be free
To fall with you like snow on endless space.
Future could hold that our tracks leave no trace
But setting sun still may bloom golden hue.
