How do you play with the words in writing poems?

Im malaysian and my english is not that good. sometimes i found out that its hard to pour what inside my heart when the words wouldnt come out. how to improve this so that my feelings can be expressed out right?

Start a diary? It helps a lot.

I like to use alliteration and metaphor, though. Take two completely random things and try to see what they have in common.

I like to just use more complex words

don't use weak words like "fine" "things" "sad"
they are just so bland
use more developed language :)
