    Poem #1

A tree of beauty beyond the trail
in trying times of mother, frail,
    between which rest the silhouettes
of creatures hid behind a veil.

A young one's eyes is all it takes
to tour a tunnel, to turn a place
of farmland lush with corn and cob
to Totoro's world of yawn and calm.

From seedling sprouts to trees up high,
to Catterbus leaps in boundless skies,
to the arms of love in mama's smile,
    Totoro dried this child's eye.

    Poem#2

    Title: Mei Kusakabe

Yellow-green fields marked the beginning of our countryside.
I used to look at them and worry about spending the nights
under rooftops held up by broken and unsteady pillars.
    Empty, run-down houses left curiosity blossoming in me;
I thought, maybe I would see soot sprites
trying to creep into tiny holes on the walls,
or small dust-bunnies waiting for me to close the windows and doors.
Or will there be ghosts trying to scare me away?
Whatever they were, I was not afraid.
I would go down rabbit holes and play with my neighbor, Totoro.

Now I spend my days wallowing in my daily cacophonies.
The countryside has grown old, and I have too,
yellow fields and empty houses bring nostalgia that
swims across my aimless heart every moment.
But now I only have my anxieties creeping into
tiny holes on the walls of my mind,
my worst headaches waiting for me to
    close the windows and blinds.
And my worries about tomorrow leave me scared and blue.
I don't know why but I am afraid this time.

Oh Totoro, come and hold my hand,
let me fall asleep on your soft belly again.
We will plant saplings and dance around them at midnight,
We will ride on the catbus and visit my
ailing mother with hands full of golden corns.

Oh TO - TO - RO
    take my hand
    and pull me out into
    the light again.
