Have you ever planted one from seed? What has been your experienced?

We have done so a couple of times. We suspended the tips in water, held upright in the container by toothpicks stuck in four places. Roots developed, stems grew up. Each time we placed it outside here in Houston it was killed by the frost.

We never tried a greenhouse or other shelter. Also, researching it later we found the California varieties are not suitable for Houston. There are Mexican varieties that stand the cold better. Randy Lemon had some good information.

I have about 8 now. I’m going to have to make changes when winter comes. I basically bought my avocados from the store and kept the pit. The pit I just wrapped it in a wet paper towel and stored it in a plastic bag in a drawer. I left it there for about two weeks hehe and the pit opens up. Then I just throw them in pots. Two of them are growing beautifully, but I had to use aloe Vera to heal some of the branches. I also need to move them to where there’s less sun and occasions I have to move them back again to where there’s lot of sun.

I find they developed better when there’s more plants around them.
