Hey Everyone Its Nikki.... :( I'm Sorry To Bother Everyone But Hurricane Rita Is Heading For Texas And Destroying The Gulf...The Sad Thing Is That In Only a Couple Hours I Would Reach The Gulf! Eventhough They Haven't Said The Area I Stay In Needs To Evacuate I'm Not Sure What I'll Do...My Famliy Prepared For The Storm But My Mom Totally Refuses To Leave Untill She Knows We Are In Danger....The Weather Seems So Normal :( I'm Shaking Over Here If You Have Any News On Evacuation In Missouri City Texas (Its Only 4mins Away From Houston) Or Any Part Of Fortbend Please Let Me Know Because I Just Moved Out Here And I Don't Know If I'm In Danger...

Isnt it ironic that they evacutated tons of people to Houston, and now another hurricaine is coming there?

It's a pity Rita couldn't just drop right on top of the white house when ole georgie boys at home...now that would be poetic justice.

    And damn funny.

Man...i don't know what the big deal is...i mean America is a hurricane and tornado hot spot...if you live there then you gotta expect and be prepared, and more importantly, though i know this sounds awful...ready to not complain all that much about it?

People in Japan shouldn't ever complain about earthquakes you know? Just like i never complain about the crazy weather we get in scotland. It's where we choose to live.

Nikki, you can get up to the hour info on the status of Hurricane Rita and other tropical storms at the following web site:

    http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/

If you enter your city and state at the top of the page you will get local weather with the latest hurricane advisories for your area.

    I hope you stay safe.

Nikki, as I said earlier to you, check in regularly with the local weather bureau/authorities for updates and as soon as the say the word evacuate, clear out of there quick. Keep us all informed!

I really don't know what to say it's horrible that two hurricans have already gone through the gulf coast but my other train of thinkin is (I know this is bad but) I think the New Orleans ppl down there should of took alarm to the warrning I really think that was stupid on there part.....but I hope your mother will get out as soon as you can. (not to scare you.)

Hope you get out and stay safe,
    Jon

As sad as it is I find myself NOT feeling bad for people stuck in these storms as they ALL have plenty of time to evacuate. Imagine back in the old days when the weather was normal one day and then the next like hurrican Rita...I'd feel bad if it was like that but these people have plenty of notice. Being stubborn and staying in your oh so precious house is your problem...

So Far I'm Safe From Rita...Its Not Expected To Hit Land Untill Sometime In The Morning On Saturday...As For The Comments On The Hurricane I Would Have To Agree That It Seems As If New Orleans People Are Cursed.....But I Must Admit That JPM Was Right...The Hurricane Didn't Cause As Much Damage As The Levee's Breaking Did, So I Doubt That Texas Will Get As Much Damage As Louisiana Suffered, Thanks Once Again Steve For Your Advice, And I Want To Thank Everyone For Their Concern *Keep Me Lifted* xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

My sister said she heard that if they had a category 6 that's what Rita would be classified as...if that's the case it WILL be a catastrophe.

Natalie..I Would Disagree With That, When Rita Hits Land Everyone Knows It Will Loose Its Strength And Become Weak, Just Because Its a Category 4-5 Hurricane Right Now Dosen't Mean Its Going To Remain 1 When Saturday Comes, Hurricane Katrina Destroyed New Orleans I Doubt If Hurricane Rita Will Destroy Anything More Than The Gulf .... xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

Well...I'll come back and talk to you Monday. There is nothing in the storms way to slow it down so when it hits it's going to do damage. But we will see now won't we...

Houston is not threatened by H.Rita anymore. Or, its really unlikely. Its all over the news.

In Texas they are sending bus loads of people out and have been for a day or two now....even people who couldn't afford it and didn't have cars had a way out. When there are manditory evacuations there ARE ways for less fortunate people to get out.

Hurricane Rita Is No Longer a Threat To The Houston/Sorrounding Areas :) Rita Sadly Did Make a Turn For The Worst By Heading Twards Louisiana, A Popular Target For Hurricane Season This Year...Thanks Once Again For Everyones Prayer, Concern, And The Good Luck That Came With Every Update *Love Your Friend And P&Q Famliy Member* xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

Thanks for the update. We're all glad that you are safe, Nikki.

This was a far less destructive hurricane than Katrina. But once again New Orleans is getting the worst of it because the repaired levees were unable to withstand the heavy rainfall. Parts of the city are being flooded all over again.

Someone please explain to me this "category system"

I don't understand, I know I should watch the news and do research, but I'm too lazy. So how does it works? Which category is most dangerous? What are the effects of it?

Your Right I Think Category 4 & 5 Are The Worst Hurricanes But I'm Just Happy That Rita Was 3 When She Hit Land xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

It only goes up to 5, right? How come I heard someone say "6"?

Not literally speaking the term "heard"

Yeah, I should have perused the whole statement before I made any assumption. I didn't see the "if" part. Thanks for pointing that out.

"Someone please explain to me this category system"

    Hurricane Classifications (Saffir-Simpson Scale)

When tropical storms reach a sustained wind speed of 39 miles per hour (mph), they receive a name from the list maintained by the National Hurricane Center. After the storm reaches a sustained wind speed of 74 mph it becomes classified as a hurricane.

Category 1, 74-95 mph wind speed
Category 2, 96-110 mph wind speed
Category 3, 111-130 mph wind speed
Category 4, 131-155 mph wind speed
    Category 5, 156 + mph wind speed

Wind speed is measured as the maximum speed sustained over one minute duration. In a hurricane environment, peak wind gusts lasting for less than a minute are typically about 20-25% higher than the sustained wind speed. During the time Hurricane Katrina reached category 5 strength, it developed a sustained wind speed of 175 mph with wind gusts of 214 mph.
