Book recommendation?

I'd like to buy a new book today. I'm not sure what though. I like dramas, fantasy (but not so much science fiction), well if you've read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, that's the kind of thing I'm after. Does anyone have any suggestions (and stay very clear from sappy, modern romances. I hate them)?

Anything by Paulo Coelho. seriously, check him out. Start with the Alchemist. These are books about the essence of life and they make the hairs on your arms stand on end..

    Anyone read his books????

A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin... he isn't done with the series yet but 4 books are out and they are AWESOME. anyone who has read this series worships the Martin. so read these books and you will be like: damn.

I love books and reading and I don't go anywhere without a book. If you like fantasy you might like anything by T.A. Barron. I own all of his books and really like them.

There's also Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, she writes books about vamps, but her newer ones were about shapeshifter groups. But her books are kinda romancy-ish, but they also have a story behind them, not some kissy kissy woo woo crap.

I have been wanting to read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown... just haven't got to it.

But, I've never heard of any of these authors you all are talking about, but if I had to pick one author that would overcome them all, it would be...

Terry Brooks. Seriously, he is the best Fantasy author in the world. He is on the New York Times Bestseller List, and he just is the best storyteller.

The thing about Terry Brooks, though, is that you have to LOVE to read. He has, I think 14 (Shannara Series) books in a Series. They are amazing, and how he can connect each book to the next amazes me. He also has 3 book series, (Running with a Demon, Word and Void, and Angel Fire East) Which I just read, and he is coming out with a whole new series connecting to those three coming in August. And then a 5 series book, which is becoming a movie, is the Magic Kingdom for Sale-Sold. That series is alot of peoples favorites, hence, thats why its coming into movies.

But... I say, Terry Brooks Shannara Series, the best books I have ever read, no doubt. He is just magically talented. Start out with the Sword of Shannara. And then, go to his website for the order of books. Its great!

I encourage anyone who likes fantasy to read
"The Talisman" by Stephen King and Peter Straub.

    My most favoritest book ever!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to compile a list of the ones you've recommended - that should keep me going for a while.

I have heard of 'The Alchemist', I really would like to read that book.

Me, for one, am very disappointed with the Eragon books. Eragon was still in my mind after I read it - the second one killed both books for me. Awful.

Um... Ooh! I have three more books to recommend. Sorry, I am a book worm, but these three books are GREAT if you are either on a higher reading level, or a lower one. (They are in Young Adult Fiction, but it has surprised book reviewers that actually Adult Fiction Readers were picking up the book also. For, all ages.)

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. Rumor has it, it is becoming a movie. I hope not. But His Dark Materials series is unlike any other, an adventure. So if you aren't looking for a 14 book series like a mentioned up there, pick this, its the closest you can get too good Fantasy. (Terry Brooks, in my opinion, still holds the metal as the master of all fiction!)

Well, if you like fantasy, you have to check out the books by R.A. Salvatore. He writes about different kinds of creatures like dark elves, dwarfs, and humans of course. My sister got me started on those books. Also the Harry Potter books rock too.

His Dark Materials is such an excellent series!

... and did you know its being turned into a moive?

Yes! Outrageous, in my mind. Just because LOTR turned out okay in a movie doesn't mean all Fantasy books will turn out great. I be they'll ruin it and make it some Childish Magic Fest.

  • Imogen

Oh no! I love his dark materials but it'll have to be an amazing film to be even close to the books and that's never going to happen! Like you say, it'll be a ''Childish Magic Fest'', which is NOT what His Dark Materials are about!

I also agree that Lucas by Kevin Brooks is an excellent book as are all of his other books!

    Dude.

I've never been more in love in my entire life than I am with this book. Seriously. Weeks later, I was still thinking about this book and I couldn't get it out of my head. My head was spinning with the dialogue and I found myself comparing real life to this realistic fantasy book.

    Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

The BEST book I have ever read.

Its twisted with suspense, angst, LOVE like you've never read or seen on t.v. or movies before, it's just...omfg.

This book is the bible to me. lol!!!

Its fiction (obviously) but you'll find yourself wishing by the end that it was all real and someone like the hero of the story, Edward Cullen, was real. I've read this book literally 8 times in a row and I'm about to start again. I'm obsessed!!!

Oh god. I've been making everyone I know read this book!!!!

God....it just feels so REAL! AND the situations are very possible, the scenes extremely rivoting! READ IT!!!!!!!!!!

There was this magazine my Mom was reading, and sometimes I pick it up and see what these editors are showing Parents about their children/teens. Some of it is the stupidiest things, I mean seriously. There was one article on 'Teen Slang' But anyway, to my point. There was an article on getting your child/teen to read. And they automatically said they want to read Non-Fiction.

However, what actually got me into a bookworm, is Fiction! I mean, I have read a few good Non-Fiction, but Fiction is where I defintely lie. On here, it seems as if everyone is saying Fiction too...

I'm so excited to have read this liste and seen how many people also like the books I've read.

100 Years of Solitude is very good, as well as Mercedes Lackey and Amelie Atwater-Rhodes (spelt that wrong). I would probably just relist the entire thread stating I read all the books haha

If you're into fantasy I seriously suggest Elizabeth Haydon's Rhapsody Series, the first three books are Rhapsody, Prophecy and Destiny. Extremely well-written and intruiging.
