im a metalhead myself i like trash and death the most but i listen to all metal EXCEPT GLAM METAL
i think glam metal was the worst thing to happen to the human race but yeah..................
you need to get some music by the "kings of metal": Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden
the best trash metal band in the WORLD is Slayer they are the most beautiful thing.
the best death metal band would have to be satyricon.
    but yeah...
you need some AC/DC in your music library..........

there are some "sell out" bands that are still awesome like Slipknot( if you like that type of screaming stuff)

Cannibal Corpse, Opeth, the Black Dahlia Murder, Obituary, System of A Down, Nile, Kataklysm etc. are death metal:what i listen to mostly.
    so yeah
check out sabbath maiden and ac/dc atleast

Don't restrict yourself, especially not just to metal. Listen to everything you come across at least twice. Listen to some Glam metal too, you never know you might like it.

Twisted Sister, Slayer, Testament, Pantera, Judas Priest, Megadeth and early Metallica are good starters for earlier metal.

But expand, broaden your horizons. look into electronica/punk like Pitchshifter, grunge like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Explore the Beatles, Johnny Cash and David Bowie. Killing Joke and Carter USM are great underground bands too.

Keep the blinkers off and see the whole spectrum. Metal is GREAT and I love it, but music as a whole is much better and will adapt to every mood you have from Rachmaninov to Motorhead.

I'll give you a big list of metal. It's my favorite genre. I'll also throw in some rock. :)

By the way, I don't necessarily like all of these bands. Lol.

    First, metal:

    System of a down
    Slipknot
    Stone Sour (They're metal/rock)
    Children of Bodom (Thrash/Speed metal)
    Fear Factory
Korn (Not exactly metal, but still...)
    Static-X (Industrial-type matal)
    Mudvayne
    Killswitch Enagage
    Rammstein (Industrial-ish rock/metal)
Tool (A Perfect Circle's metallic cousin)
    Powerman 5000
Nightwish (Symphonic heavy metal with an operatic female singer. I'd reccomend them to anyone.)
Dimmu Borgir (Norweigan symphonic black metal)
    Cradle of Filth (Black Metal)
    Lacuna Coil
Black Label Society (Zakk Wilde's metal band.)
In Flames (One of the best Norweigan metal bands of all time)
    Atreyu
H.I.M. (Love metal at it's finest)
    Metallica
Old Man's Child (Simialair to Dimmu Borgir)
    Chimera
    Opeth
    Shadows Fall
    Iced Earth
    Demons and Wizards
    Mastodon
    Soilwork
    Judas Priest
    Black Sabbath
    Ozzy Osbourne
    Megadeth
    Pantera
    Damageplan

    Rock:

    Rob Zombie (Industrial-ish rock)
White Zombie (Very similair to Rob Zombie)
    Finger Eleven
Marilyn Manson (A mixture of Metal, Industrial rock and what some would call "glam")
    Chevelle
    Disturbed
    Seether
    The Tea Party
    Breach of Trust
    A Perfect Circle
    Godsmack
    Deftones
    Metric
    Billy Talent
    Nine Inch Nails (Industrial Rock)
    KMFDM (Industrial rock, aswell.)
    The Murderdolls
    Wednesday 13
    Blue October
    Taproot

    Yep, that's enough for now.

Why are half of the rock bands not in the metal category? Has the critera changed over the last few years?

  • Andriana

I guess so, Bret. I always thought GN'R was a bit metal, but people told me it's not.

I listen to all types of metal; Glam, Death, Black, Hair, Heavy, Thrash, Power and some Proggresive...but besides Nu-Metal...I've listened to it, and I truly do not like it. Ex. Slipknot, Marylin Manson, blah blah etc.

And I don't see anything wrong with Glam Metal, it's one of my favourites.

    Bands/Artists I'd suggest would be:
    Guns N' Roses
    Iron Maiden
    Megadeth
    Helloween
    Edguy
    Sonata Artica
    King Diamond
    Death
    Emperor
    KISS
    Kreator
    Metallica
    Nightwish
    Pink Cream 69
Rata Blanca (Spanish metal band, but very good)
    Black Sabbath
    Van Halen
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Rising Force
    Avantasia
    and so much more....

A lot of the bands I've named are more underground and unheard by the youth.

I never liked G'n'R because Axl grated on my very soul (see my quotes) but I'd leave them in the rock section because of song style. I never considered them heavy enough for metal.

    Couple other bands:

    Budgie
    Diamond Head
    Corrosion of Conformity
    The Cult (borderline metal)
    W.A.S.P

and has anyone mentioned Motorhead yet? (Probly, but I haven't woke up yet)

Who calls Marilyn Manson glam? people who have no idea what 'glam' is?

  • Jordan

Manson's been called glam a million times. I think the word "glam" is more so directed at his image.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glam_rock

If you are at all familiar with Manson, then the first few paragraphs of this will spark your memory and bring his "Mechanical Animals" (and maybe even the "Golden Age of Grotesque") album to mind. Read the lyrics and look at his selected image for these (especially for Mehcanical Animals) it fits pretty well.

They're also in Wikipedia's list of Glam Rock artists.

  • Bret Higgins

Not metal, but as you as for a broadening horizon I just got Ok Go's album 'Oh No'.

It's the best album I've bought since I got Beck's Guero and it's probably better than that.

Think Elvis Costello meets ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) Kevin, if you read this you're going to love 'em.

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

oh, well, I consider his image and music goth/industrial with strengths in BDSM and blasphemy.

  • Jordan

    ^^
Agreed, but "Mechanical Animals" still definitely fits into the glam category, whether you're willing to admit it or not.

I assume you don't like Manson or something? 'Cause I know that you like glam rock, and you seem to bee very unwilling to come to terms with this whole thing. :P

Haha, I joke with you! Ha!

I know they are way over publisised but I love slipknot, korn, lacuna coil, pod, rob zombie, disturbed, traproot, hatebreed is ok, staided old music was a hell of alot better befor they went soft, Meshuggah it a german band but they are fast and I dont know why but I just love them, HIm is ok but not one of my favs, drowning pool, stem of the down, but whats really the best to me is all the local metal around here its all heart and soul and it doesn't matter if they are playing and its not the best they have the stage presence and they just rock and dont care what people think but my favorite band in all has to be my boyfriends band Shinebox. they rock and its fun to hear about them I'm still waiting to see them but I have a million of there cds and I love it they are good. yep I know its probably just me but then agian he goes on tour so often I thick I'm sick of the band. lol Metal rocks!!

  • President Dead

People who don't knw much about manson will laugh at the suggestion of calling his music "glam". But those that know who he really is and how his music has progressed in stages, will undertand that his album "Mechanical Animals" has some heavy glam rock influences in it, eg Rock is Dead, Don't like the drugs...., Mechanical Animals, Last Day on earth. just to name a few songs from that album

  • Jordan

    Good point.

You must be a fan with a name such as "President Dead."

That is a great song, by the way.

and to Trapped in a haze:
Pete Wentz is on Fall Out Boy
and Pierre Bouvier's on Simple Plan

Slayer, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden, Kataklysm, Slipknot, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall, Black Label Society, Unearth...
Um, my mind's kind of going blank right now as to what I usually listen to, but there's a few I guess.

I fail to see why Maiden are liked so much, they're very much a one song band.

Look at all of their albums after their debut and tell me how many songs push the fold... three... four maybe?

Don’t stop now go back even further like
the early 70s and 60s and even the to 50s
since you came this far start at the began
were rock n roll started back in the 50s
like when gospel music was said to have
gone bad with R and B music of Motown
and Elvis then called rock n roll like Buddy Holly,
Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis who influenced
the British invasion of the 60s like the Beatles,
Hermit Hermits and Rolling Stones who influenced
Americans bands like The Dave Clark 5, Association,
    and The Loved Ones.
Who influenced the next wave of Rock bands
the Psychedelic era with bands like The
    Strawberry Alarm Clock, Tommy James,
Vanilla Fudge and then like out of nowhere
came the first METAL bands with I think is/or
was John Kay and Stepping Wolf and of course
Alice Copper who started makeup, leather and
live theatrical props and acts on the stage
and at about the same time in the late 60s
another sound was in the making like the
great bands Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath
who brought the darker side of rock music in
and all the great bands of the 70s like Grand Funk,
Lynard Skinner, The Allman Bothers Band and
don’t forget Disco like Casey and the Sunshine band
as in the 70s brought on more new sounds at the
    same time then any other.
Rock was still strong along with progressive
rock bands like Yes and Kansas along with jazz-rock
bands like Chicago, Vehicle and pop bands like the Jackson 5,
The Partridge Family and The Osmond Family as bands
like Iron Maiden who ushered I believe the start of speed
metal bands and all the other hard core metal bands of today.
like my sons band Sick Life who has opened bands like
Korn, Slipknot and Slayer. * I just had to add that *

You sounded so excited in hearing bands from the past
I thought you would enjoy a blast from the past of a short
and for the most part actuate history of rock.
Rock n Roll will never die,
    Bogie

P.S. I have been playing in bands all my life
and like all music except gang rap and hate rap
    against women.

This old man likes to listen to and
can still keep up playing drums to
    bands like,

    Evanescence
    King Diamond
    Godsmack
    GreenDay
    Def Leppard
    Guns N' Roses
    Led Zeppelin
    U2
    B52S
