Ok, you're stranded on an island by yourself and you have only five singles and a book with you.

What five songs (not albums) and one book do you take with you and why?

    Let's see ..
    I would take:

Queen - We will rock you
    Queen - Radio Gaga
    Alice Cooper - Poison
    Oasis - Wonderwall
Oasis - Don't look back in anger

    And the book ....
Possibly a Stephen King book ...

Can you explain your choices? Do they simply rock in your mind or do they have emotional links?

sarah mclachlan- arms of an angel
alanis morrisette- one hand in my pocket
    tupac- broken wings
nas- if i ruled the world
    lauren hill- ex factor

I wouldn't take a book.. but a note book with like 1000 pages..

    Bret, both really ..

Queen - We will rock you - One of the greatest songs written, and the memory I have of this song is of 500 people at a musical in London doing to clapping.

Queen - Radio Gaga - This song just rocks

Alice Cooper - Poison - Again, this song just rocks

Oasis - Wonderwall - I remember when I was about 8 constantly listening to these two Oasis songs, singing along at every opportunity
Oasis - Don't look back in anger
    :]

And they also all rock. They are awesome songs.

    Songs:

Pocket Calculator - Kraftwerk (Computer World).

Probably the best song from the band that brought electronic music to the world.

    Limo Wreck - Soundgarden (Superunknown).

This song got me interested in writing. It's my favourite song and is the best example of an 'I told you so' song you'll find.

Paperback Writer - The Beatles (A-Side single).

My favourite Beatles song and you simply have to have a Beatles song!

Andy Warhol - David Bowie (Hunky Dory).

I grew up with Bowie, he's always been there in one shape or another. The man is a genius, especially at re-invention. This song inspired Metallica's Master of Puppets.

Spoilsports Personality - Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine (Post-Historic Monsters).

Maybe not their best song, but when I think of Carter it's always in y playlist where others aren't.

    Book:

Nero Wolfe Omnibus - Rex Stout (1944).

The best Private Detective writer of all time, period. An essential read for anyone who wants to improve their diction, style character development and general approach to writing.

Song 1: Girl Anachronism - Dresden Dolls
    reason: they rock
Song 2: Mandy Goes To Med School - Dresden Dolls
reason: it reminds me of the 1930's
Song 3: Hell Here - Ghost Buffalo
    reason: the song effing rocks
Song 4: Chainsaw Massacre - The Koffin Kats
reason: I can't stop listening to it
Song 5: Play Dead...And I'll Play Along - Ion Dissonance
reason: If I go to long without xcoreness, I'll throw a fit

Book: Black Creek Crossing - John Saul
reason: It never gets old, the greatest book he's written.

Beatles: A day in the life. You can get inside the song and have a look around the way you can an art gallery.

Radiohead: Creep. For the times when I've been one.

Pink Floyd: Wish You Were here. For times when I do.

    U2: I Still Have'nt found What I'm Looking For. Because I have'nt and know I never will.

Bowie: Life On Mars. First time I took populr music seriously and felt emotion in a song without being prompted.

Book: Geoff Thompson's Watch My Back. A fellow martial artist with insight and wit.

    Ok....

    Bother - Stone Sour

Reason: The song is just plain beautiful. The lyrics are great, the guitar is haunting, and the song is just so damned sad.

    Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson

Reason: This is one of his lyrical masterpieces. The way that Manson plays with words makes me very happy. On top of that, I love his voice, and the music is great.

Needled 24/7 - Children of Bodom

Reason: It's Thrash Metal at it's finest. The speed gets me pumped, so does Alexi Laiho's voice. They are complete metal playing machines.

Progenies of the Great Apocalypse - Dimmu Borgir

Reason: This is the most amazing symphonic black metal song ever. I'm pretty sure that even if one could not bear to listen to Shagrath's droning/gutteral voice, they would be able to listen to the song due to it's breathtaking symphonic music. The piano is amazing, aswell. It's what one would consider an "epic" song. Oh, and I love the lyrics, too.

    Planet Hell - Nightwish

Reason: It's Nightwish. They're one of the best metal bands out there. They mix hard metal with orchestra and top it all off with a lovely lady who sings sing wonderful operatic vocals. This song is one of their best.

Note: Nightwish are not currently the band I explained. In november of 2005, their songstress left them. How sad.

My favorite book would have to be The Talisman by Stphen King and Peter Straub.

It is excellent. Stephen King is amazing enough by himself, but this book is of the greatest epic prportions. It is such a good adventure story, and the writing is flawless. I love it with all of my heart.

Over and Over by Hot CHip

This is the most recent song to invade my brain and not let me go, and It would be a good one to build a raft/shelter to..plus is a dancey number...so I could "entertain" any female natives.

No One Knows by Queens Of The Stoneage

For me, aside from being an amazingly catchy kickass song, it's about society, inner thoughts, madness and God..it always get me thinking and makes me air guitar my way around the room/beach.

    The Tourist by Radiohead

This song makes me shed a tear or two every time i hear it for reasons I won't go into here. The vocals are beautiful, it would be a perfect moonlight beach song for remembering everyone I'd ever loved.

The Cost Of Living by Dakota Suite

This is a reall depressing song about time slipping by, wasting away..missing a woman, regretting thing...the perfect motivational tune you'd require to help you survive the horrow or shipwreck scenario...nah really it's a top tune, quite jazzy and chilled.

    Verdis Quo by Daft Punk

This is a lovely cheery song of beautiful organ music that beats up towards the end...it would be a great exploration song, and nice in the afternoons.

My book would be Moby Dick by Herman Melville, which I haven't read yet, but about 15 different people I respect greatly have told me it is one of the finest, most dense books around, with so much going on on so many levels I'm sure it would be worth about 4 re-reads.Class.

    1) "Green and Grey" by New Model Army - Lovely lyrics, beautifully composed. Living in a small industrial town, everything about it rings true.

    2) "The Unknown Knows" by VoiVod - Upbeat and relentless with nonsense lyrics and a catchy chorus, it's just a song I've loved for so long now.

    3) "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" by Monster Magnet - more nonsense party metal lyrics, but it's a favourite "I'm bored" song.

    4) "Feelgood Hit Of The Summer" by Queens of the Stone Age - for some reason it reminds me a lot of my youth. Not so much a song as a shopping list. ;-)

    5) "Cloudbusting" by Kate Bush - I always like Kate's offbeat, quirky pop as a youngster, but this song introduced me to the concept of there being more to life than the science you learn at school. Inspiring stuff.

The Book: "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimain (or Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett in America!) - This is just the most fantastically paced and irreverently funny book I have ever read. Everything about it is just perfect, and I think anyone who appreciates that life is not and is never going to be perfect, but holds hope and faith in their heart and mind is going to love this. It's THE modern classic.

    1. "In This Diary" by The Ataris

I don't particularly like this song as much as I once did, but it never fails to make me smile. When I first heard it (when I was 14), I'd just started going out and doing fun things with my friends. This song reminds me of that - and how after all this time, we're still close, and still causing havok. :D

    2. "Sexy Results" by Death From Above 1979

This song just makes me feel really good about myself, and makes me want to dance seductively (haha). I just like the way it makes me feel, and if a song can make me feel like that, it's worth listening to.

    3. "Passenger Seat" by Death Cab For Cutie

This song is sweet and touching, and leaves me sitting here with a pensive smile.

    4. "Televators" by The Mars Volta

The thing about The Mars Volta, is they're so different to anything else I've ever heard. I adore that originality. And because someone very close recommended them to me, I like them all the more (this song being one of my favourites).

    5. "Spit Shine Your Black Clouds" by The Blood Brothers

Now the album this is on hasn't even been released yet, and won't be for another couple of months, so I've only just heard it myself by pure chance (well, because it leaked). However, this song invigorates me. When listening to this, I get outbursts of energy, and want to get things done - if I'm stranded on a desert island, it would be good to have a song that'll motivate me.

The Book: "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

This is one of those books I can read again, and I'll pick up on things I failed to notice the first time round and after only a couple of weeks, I begin to forget bits of the story, so it's a great book to re-read again and again, to keep it fresh in my mind. Plus, it is well written, and kept me glued to the pages until I'd finished.

    "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies
It's my crazy-dance-around-screaming-the-lyrics song, even though I can only understand half the words sometimes.

    "Chemical Party" by Gavin DeGraw
This is a song that I discover new levels to every time I hear it.

"Away From The Sun" by 3 Doors Down
It's a sad, yet also hopeful song, about fighting what pushes you, well, away from the sun.

"La Vie Boheme" by Jonathan Larson (for the play Rent)
A fun, giddy song to belt out the lyrics to and dance crazily to. *sighs* Good times, good times.

    "Cathedrals" by Jump Little Children
A slow, haunting lullaby that has calmed me many times, and probably always will.

For the book, I'd bring Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Spanish. It is taking forever to read and will probably last me a lifetime.
