What is a poem?

1. a composition in verse, esp. one that is characterized by a highly developed artistic form and by the use of heightened language and rhythm to express an intensely imaginative interpretation of the subject.

2. composition that, though not in verse, is characterized by great beauty of language or expression: a prose poem from the Scriptures; a symphonic poem.

Ok folks I've been readin a lot of your work over the last few days and I have to say that I'm disappointed. Although poetry is a good way to get your feeling out and release some pressure, or to relate your experiences in life to others, it has to ahve some substance.

Example:

I thought you loved me
but it was a lie
you never cared at all
and it hurts me so much

This is not a poem, it's two sentences broken down to form a verse so to look like a poem. There is no prose, no thought to diction, vernacular or punctuation. It's a statement.

When you write a poem don't just express your feelings, try to push yourself in your chosen language.

Seriously, I'm tired of reading the same statements day in day out.

Right-o... I'll keep it in mind.
I think my problem is that when my mind is in a very confused state, I resort to the simplest words.
My vocabulary usually isn't extensive enough to be able to project complex words of fragrant beauty... but hey, that's just me. Congrats to the "real" poets, who are good and know it.

Hah. I have to agree with that. Most of the poems I read.. are all like that. They have nothing to them. Well. I can't say my poems are much better, but I didn't really come here to share my poems, I came here.. to let others know what I think of their work. Oo.
