Genetically Enhanced?

To me the idea of being able to pick your unborn child's personality is scary.
If people could do that it seems like all kids would be 'perfect' and very similar.
What's your opinion on the matter?

We discussed this in Sociology after reading an article about this (the article was ten years old according to our teacher though).

    Sounds like Gattica.
A very shitty science fiction film.
    I wouldn't recommend it.
Even though it does explore a world where this thinking might exist.

Jude Law's character should have had more emphasis.imho.

A child wouldn't be seen as special anymore. Merely a manufactured product. Might as well be robots, if you ask me.

    A manufactured product.

An excellent way of putting it, Taylor.

Scientists say that there are different genes for different things like obeseity, shyness, anger, etc. So I guess they'd do something with those, but I have no clue how'd they do it.

yes, I agree people should not play god.
if they dont like the way there children turn out,
one: they should have raised them better,
or two: they shouldn't have kids in the first place.

I don't think it's right to set some one's personality, it's like setting how they think so you're telling your children "Okay, you have freedom of will, but you only have the will I let you have when I made you." Makes them sound like manufactured, not born, like they're not important, can't be unique ect.

I would never do that, I'd rather risk having a child born with brain damage or growing up with anger problems I'd have to deal with... I may decide otherwise when I grow up and do have kids, but that's my stance now.

Actually in modern science right now, we do have the ability to change ones genes before they are born. Personality is not plausible to change due the the fact you must experience life before having one :)

Parents usually want to have a certanty that their children will be smart and achieve highly, so i can understand why such a thing as being genetically enehanced would come into the picture (no-one wants there baby to become a serial killer), but if a parent has so much lack in faith of their parenting skills then maybe they should rethink having a child so soon....

I thought the thing about genetic engineering, with regards to personality, was that it wasn't about programming someone like a robot from birth, because it's experience that shapes people I've found, though of course some folk are more disposed to react to situations in a certain manner more than others.

So, if i baby is engineered to be less aggressive than a normal baby, they can still be aggressive, they are still capable of anger etc, it's just less likely.

I am all for engineering when it comes to medical purposes like the eradication of illness and disabilities at birth, though physical attributes and personality I leave to chance.

Give me the child and i will give you the man, or woman... [can't remember who said that, and they never said the woman part cause it was from a while ago]...but i believe we are blank slates or varying size and shape.

we can all have the same things, good or bad written upon us, some, due to our individuality are easier to write or draw on than others...but the space is there for everyone.

    Regardless of genes.
