If You Were Walking By My Side

It's such a beautiful day, Baby,
and I wish you were here
the sky is pale gray and
raindrops fall past my ears

I'm wearing a hoodie and jeans
cuz the temperature's just right
walking to class is like a blessing,
every person a beautiful sight

it smells just like it did
when we met up after school
when we walked around town
and everything was cool

yeah, I know cool and school
are always a cheesy rhyme
but I don't care right now
and I just needed a line

I feel good right now
and I almost forgot my fear
that you're writing her notes, too
and gently wiping her tears

at first when I'd cry
I'd hide my tears shyly
but you would say so sweet
"I want you to cry on me"

but this year it got too much
cuz I was a little depressed
and your arms were no longer
a place for me to rest

I understand that I unnerved you
nobody's without flaws
but how could you leave me for it
there must be another cause

but I just sidestepped
into another topic
it's hard not to do but I
guess that I should drop it

so getting back to the rain
it was falling on my face
so I tilted my head back
to see how it would taste

it tasted like the end
of winter's duration
or maybe like the beginning
of a summer vacation

either way, without you with me
it just wasn't the same
the rain without your kisses,
now isn't that a shame?

that bitter rejection
by the one I love the most
turning me away after
you pulled me in so close

it makes me feel worthless
like a child who's sent away
by their mother or father
after they'd promised they could stay

it brings up so many questions
like What did I do wrong?
Why aren't I good enough? and
How can you just say so long?

But today I got excited
when those cool drops started falling
happiness began replacing
all the baggage I was hauling

I looked into the sky
and reached up to hold God's hand
and I'll keep hanging onto it
the best that I can

but the thing that would've made the day
the best that it could be
is if you were walking by my side
to celebrate with me
