The dog, monkey, rooster, rabbit and snake

by Mike Wilburn   Apr 15, 2008

The characters represented are based on the Chinese calendar.

Once upon a time a dog was traveling
Chasing his tail, lonely his spirit unraveling
Lost, the sunrise did not illuminate his gloom
Unfulfilled without prospect, an imaginary tomb
Sunset is darkness absent a guiding light
Occasionally a welcome stray to brighten the night
Year after year a circular endless passage
Hope his solitary companion each day onstage
A menagerie of characters the pup did test
Willing participants did not impress
Endless routine the mind will numb
Yearning for love and family to come
Blinded by desire for offspring to treasure
Bounding bundles of joy his only measure
A natural mother the monkey did portray
Unity forever; a lengthy engagement passe
Welcome companions begin the journey anew
Built a home, happiness long overdue
Eternity can't last when trust is surrendered
Problems arise when love isn't tendered
Brave souls don't always accept defeat
The dream within can appear very sweet
A rooster upon the scene did arrive
Beautiful the dog knew they could survive
Years later the rabbit and then the snake
The dog, his family he would not forsake
He had what he always wanted, his life complete
But the monkey was restless, he couldn't compete
A youthful bride, some say ignorance is bliss
Wise old dogs discover what young ones miss
The monkey couldn't help but be untrue
Afraid of aging, other lovers she did pursue
Loyal to the end the dog did pardon
Selfish by nature the monkey did harden
Happily ever after a fantasy misbegotten
Inevitable when love is forgotten
