Untitled - Memories

Memories flutter softly around me
Flashing, blinking, floating down.
Travel years back, before attacks,
Before wars fought behind closed doors.
All's possible in an unveiled mind.

A camping trip by the seaside
Enjoying a perfect time in the pleasant air.
Stumbling around across uneven ground,
Waves crash to the sound of children shrieking
With delight at the chill water on their toes.

Sandy rock beaches,
Clear tide pools crawling with life:
Purple sea urchins, orange starfish, darting minnows.
Remembering your childish wonder at these natural aquariums
And writing names in the sand.

It's time to go now
And as the disappointment shows clearly
On the child's face in your mind's eye,
So it does upon your now adult one.

Snap back to reality,
Grungy cities, seedy deals.
Trips to the beach? Ha, all you see is grey.
Grey water, grey sand, grey squishy seaweed.

What happened here?
Innocence is just another distant memory
A lost world
My lost world - my time
