Guardian Angel

by rosalina calling   Mar 5, 2009

Tears spill out of downcast eyes.
Arms draped around legs huddled close to her chest.
Her heart beats rapidly.
Her breath comes in short bursts.
The darkness threatens to swallow her up.
She cries helplessly into the night.
Her pain allows her no sleep.
Sorrow rings circle around her eyes.
Should she dare to think,
The thought pierces her heart, sharp and swift.
There is no waking from this nightmare as she sees it.
But wait.
Dawn breaks.
The sun casts a slow shadow
On her broken form.
Rays of warmth tickle her skin.
What makes her look up?
And then she sees him.
Her angel.
And her tears subside.
Her guardian angel,
Dressed in pure white,
Bathed in the glowing light
Of the rising sun.
And he walks toward her,
His footsteps lighter than a cloud.
He reaches out his hand.
She takes it.
And he pulls her toward him,
Up, out of the darkness.
But those downcast eyes...
They still look to the side.
Do they dare believe what they are seeing?
Yes.
Yes they do.
And the belief fills her heart
With unimaginable joy.
Though still she cannot look up
For fear that she will discover
An illusion.
But then...
His hand brushes her cheek.
He wipes her tears away.
His fingers curl under her chin
And he tilts her face upward, toward his.
And leaning in,
He kisses her,
A kiss that is
Soft and sweet, but also
Deep and passionate.
And so, so full of love.
She pulls him close,
Eyes shut tight to savor the moment,
Arms wrapped around his waist,
Her heart beating rapidly.
Their lips part as he promises
Never to let go,
Never to leave.
So much time passes
In that single moment.
And as the sun sets
He looks into her eyes,
Tells her he loves her.
And she loves him so much.
Her guardian angel.
