What Is Christmas?

by Ashleigh Skye   Oct 2, 2005

Someone asked me today what Christmas was,
and I thought about it long and hard.
Where abouts could I possibly start,
with the reindeer in the front yard?

Should I start with Santa Clause,
his red suit, and his mighty sleigh?
Or should I start with the baby Jesus,
after all it is his birthday.

Should I start with all the Christmas Carols,
that people know by heart?
Or should I start with the presents under the tree,
that children eagerly rip apart?

How about the mighty reindeer,
especially the one with the red nose.
Or should I begin with the special feeling,
that children get when it snows?

Or what about the elves,
in the workshop way up North.
Or how the children go to sleep early,
as not to scare Santa when he comes forth.

I though of all the possibilities,
the wrapping paper, shopping, and trees,
the long and short Christmas lists,
stuffed turkey, and classic movies.

When suddenly it hit me,
the true meaning behind the day.
It's to love the people around you,
no matter what they do or say.

The day is about forgiveness,
to celebrate the birth of the son,
to love the people around you,
with the scent of apples and cinnamon.

So when I was finished my story,
a smile lit up her face,
and I could tell she understood,
about the culture I embrace.

As I have written in the poetry contest:

"This poem is truly amazing and I heart the way it rhymed without repeating itself much. In the first stanza you mention about the reindeer, and you repeated it again in stanza four. Though it kinda repeated itself, you somehow made it work, very nice."
