That man

by beav   Jan 26, 2007

I met a man just the other day.
i'd never seen him before.
after speaking to him
for only moments,
it was as if we'd long been
dear friends.
his intelligence was remarkable.
he spoke from shakespeare
to silverstein.
he'd traveled from rome
to the rio grande.
his idiom- enchanting.
grace flowed from this man.
ease sat with him.
of all he revealed,
i could sense one thing;
i had only been exposed by a fraction.
his eyes were deep.
perhaps a bit weary-
but beautiful.
his hands were calloused.
worn by age-
but strong.
his presence was felt.
unobtrusively commanding.
unknowingly i had spent more than
a couple of hours with him.
hurried by my
meager life's demands.
i had to excuse myself.
as i was walking away
i heard coins fall into what
sounded like a paper cup.

    Now that was a poem!!
I like poems that read as a conversation with the reader, it makes it very personalised.
Reading I was wondering what significance this man could possibly have. But the ending was subtly clever. A penny dropped (excuse the pun) as to who this man actually was, and I felt my soul move (cheesy explanation I know).
The langauge was straight forward, which in this case was good.
I would suggest using capital letters in the appropriate places though because not only is it gramatically correct, it looks easier on the eye. Plus, it's only what publishers would do anyway hehe.

    Thanks for sharing.
