He who pays the piper always names the tune

by Ronald Edwards   Dec 7, 2010

There was a time
upon the earth
when there became a need,

to share a message
far and wide,
it was for all to heed.

The word soon spread
by way of mouth
out in the village square.

But not all those
who heard the word
agreed with this affair.

None the less
this message was
heard on a mountain side.

Continuing
from town to town,
it could not be denied.

In efforts to
contain its truth
a tribunal was arranged.

For many who
heard of the word
knew they would be estranged.

An offer was
presented to
merge with what was said.

The messenger
who spread this word
refused and wound up dead.

This message had
to remain pure
in fear it would dilute.

It could not mix
with anything,
impositions would pollute.

The message must
not mix or change,
has to remain immune.

For he who pays
the piper
always names the tune.

Religion can not merge with politics.

I thougt you were speaking of the old inquisition when i was reading your poem, so I guess I was not too far off. I love your poem, it makes you think and sticks with you. Not many can convey their message the way you do.

    Astounding work!

True statement at the end, Religion can not merge with politics. To many people try to do this and it doesn't work. Religion should merge with our lives only.

I am so grateful you have stated at the end of your poem what you were trying to relate this to. I would have been lost forever in a sense of nothingness. Anyway what you have said is so true. Many words have been spoken and you have kept to that which must be. The flow of the poem was descent though at times I thought the poem broke off but then regained its structure and few minutes later.

All in all, I found this poem a joy to read and I enjoyed the message of your poem and i agree with it about one hundred percent. Great job and keep writing.
