Haiku Contest

Following swiftly on from Mr D's fruit contest, I bring you a much less imaginative haiku contest. Below are the names of ten animals (so up to ten entrants) and all you have to do is reserve one on a first come, first served basis. As soon as I have ten participants, people can post their poems on this thread OR in a week from now but with a minimum of five people taking part.
I will judge the competition myself as well as I am able and the winner will get a nomination from me on that piece (should they post) and an in-depth comment on any two poems they wish.
    Sign up below.

    Elephant--*Brenda
    Dragonfly--*Andrea
    Fox --*Michael
    Orangutan--*Mr D
    Dolphin--*Milly
    Cat--*Ya----Na
    Rat--*Larry
    Badger
    Spider--*Hellon
    Mole--*MA

Nice to see you, ladies. Your spots are reserved.

Milly - haiku tend to deal with all things nature and are written with 17 syllables: line 1 = 5, line 2 = 7, line 3 = 5.

I'm going to give this until Saturday, and then people can start posting their haiku on this thread.

    Hi Ben,
    here is my haiku..

    Fox

    urban predators
    upon sunset boulevard
    gingerly hunting

  • Maple Tree

    Dragonfly (Haiku)

    my dragon; my love
    conjuring a bewitched dream
    spellbinding beauty

  • Ben Pickard

Two in and may I just say, they are genuinely beautiful. And I'm not just saying that - Maple and Michael have set a real mark down there.

    Deadly Legacy

    Gentle dolphin smiles
    joyfully dives in waves
    Our waste kills her dead

  • Ben Pickard

poignant, Milly. All I would say is that line 2 has 6 syllables instead of 7 bringing the overall count to 16 BUT I believe many modern haiku are written with 17 syllables OR LESS. So all good there.

    clever old orangutan (haiku)

    hanging, he plucks fruit;
    spitting out the seeds across
    a bare forest floor

Sorry Ben it is my mistake it was meant to be diving not dives :(

    Mole

    You try to trap me,
but I craft tunnels that shame
    insipid humans.

Ya----Na's joined the fray and chosen 'Cat'

  • Brenda

For the love of an elephant (Haiku)

    Matriarchal led
    only mammal that can't jump
    caring, tranquil souls...

  • Ya----Na

    Nature's footprints

    Cuddle the mother,
    and leave nature's footprints in
    the hearts of kittens.

  • Hellon

I'll have spider if it's still available?

    Spider (Haiku)

    outside my window
a masterpiece of spun jewels: (syllable count says jewels has 2 but my accent says 1)
    suddenly, the thaw.

  • Ben Pickard replied to Hellon

Three more great haiku from Brenda, Ya----Na and Hellon. Just Larry's due in now, I think.

Hellon - 'jewel' is one of those words, isn't it? To be honest, I thought it was one anyway!

    babies in her burrow deep
    never saw death’s owl.
