If Only They Had Known

PART ONE
It was second grade when they first met.
Some things we will remember. Others we'll forget.
They were the best of all friends,
But there was a pain inside of him
That only time mends.

He loved her more than anything,
But wouldn't let her know.
He was afraid that if he told her,
Away their friendship would go.

As each day passed, he loved her more and more,
But every single second, his heart was very sore.
They grew older and moved on to middle school
And high school after that.
He came even closer to telling her,
But was worried about how she'd react.

What he didn't know, is that she felt the same way.
Sometimes she tried to tell him,
But couldn't find the right words to say.
She finally just decided to give up on him.
"Besides,"she thought,"James only likes me as a friend."

PART TWO
One day, another handsome guy asked for her heart.
She said yes to him, but it tore James apart.
Finally she realized,"This isn't what I want,
And it's not what I need,
But James and I are meant to be.
It is our destiny."

That very day, she knocked on his front door.
She asked his mom,"Is James home?".
She replied with a tear,
"I'm sorry. James doesn't live here anymore."
Katy asked,"What do you mean?"
Then James's mother explained the whole thing.

She said,"James came home yesterday
With red and teary eyes.
It was such a big surprise to me
Because James never cries.
I asked him, "What's the matter?"
He said,"It's nothing. I need to be alone."
How, then, could I have known
That our lives were about to shatter?"

"He went up to his room, his radio loudly screaming.
I went upstairs to turn it down.
When I saw the blood on the floor
I thought I was dreaming.
All I could think was why? and how?.

PART THREE
She said "That's when I found this note.
Apparently it's for you.
Always, he has loved you, Katy.
That's something you never knew.
It's sad that you weren't aware
Until his days were through."

Bawling and trembling,
Katy took the note and read every single word.
None of it seemed real to her.
It was all just to absurd.
Nothing at all seemed to make sense inside of her head.
The note was sweet and heartbreaking.
Here is what it said:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since we met on the playground
That beautiful spring say,
I have always loved you, Katy.
I have always felt this way.
Every time I saw you, Katy, my heart began to race,
And it started to beat at a completely abnormal pace.
I loved you so much, Katy,
But every other guy did too.
You have no idea what I would've given
Just to be with you.
I thought about you all the time,
And knew we were meant to be.
I hated spending all that time
Wondering what you felt for me.
I wanted to be with you. I didn't want to be alone.
I spent all my evenings hoping you might call,
Staring at the phone.
Well, Katy, I just figured life without you isn't life at all.
It felt like you were flying
While watching me slowly fall.
When you said yes to Steve, it broke my heart in two.
I decided to give up. I didn't know what to do.
But that kitchen knife is wise, and it has set me free.
Oh, Katy, I wish you could've known.
I wish you would've seen.
But now that I am gone,
It doesn't matter what you think of me,
But my heart is yours forever, Katy,
And it will always be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Trying hard to breathe, she ran all the way home.
That knife sliced through her ivory skin,
So deep that it collided with her bone.
Things would finally be right.
She would get to be with him.
Things were becoming unclear as she lost her sight.
Her breath was becoming short, hard, and thin.

Today that statue stands
Outside their high school's doors.
They are sculpted holding hands
The way they should've been years before.
Their names are engraved in stone,
And they no longer have to be alone.
It was second grade when they first met.
Some things we will remember. Others we'll forget.
