The English Language Learner

by Abha   Mar 25, 2008

I found the English language fascinating
Without the knowledge, my confidence breaking,

Discovered a centre whose banners shout
Like the fishing lines catching trout,

Pronounce the Lingo, in just months three
Transformed soon into a humming English bee,

My sincere trust commenced the course
Books, Audio visuals provided the source,

My learning site was already so stuffed
The nerves and brain cannot be easily bluffed,

My mother tongue interfered, stubbornly every time
The irate teacher resented my innocent crime,

So many rules of stress and syllables do break
In every new word, a new sound they intake.

Tongue twisters, nasal sound format combine
The vowels, consonants, diphthongs ally behind.

My native phoneme perceived in every sound
Transfer me to Britain, it will still be seen around,

My brain cells fought a battle royal
As for freedom our countrymen had toiled,

No encroachment would ever be acceptable
Declaration signed, pledges made perceptible,

The broken pieces could not remain firm
I stammered till the expiry of my term,

The road to intonation could not be tread
My teacher learned my mother-tongue instead.

The linguist, phoneticians looked insane
Became multilingual, an incredible bargain,

Why so much hullabaloo about a foreign tongue
In the honor of my mother I can still praises sung.

A wonderful poem with a perfect flow. It has a mix up of a good sense of humour and delicate touch of satire in it. You really enjoy what you do and delineate it into poetry. A great attempt.
