The Unexpected guest

by Jon   May 11, 2008

This poem actually comes in 3 parts but part 1 was a haiku and just and introduction to part 2 so in the interest of saving time i left out part one and gave part 2 & 3 here

this is a true story that happened in August of 2001

The Unexpected Guest (part 2) The Disaster

It was a storm,
the worst storm of the year.
one August day canceled my sister's 11th birthday party.
The lighting raced and the thunder roared.
The wind pushed and pushed with all it's might.

I told my mom the storm was bad.
We hid behind the couch with a lantern.
through all that happened,
the power never went out.
Mom's cell was in the kitchen,
just a few long and frightful feet away.
Mom was in the office and dad was at work.

At the point everything was silent,
until the tree attacked.
A thunderous crash roared through the house.
We staid there for just a minute.
until I summoned the courage to look.
the rain was pouring through a crack in the ceiling
and I saw the leafy culprit
by the back glass door.

The Unexpected Guest (part 3) The Aftermath

We then ran to my sister's closet,
It was farther from where disaster struck,
but also farther from Mom's phone.
we were scared to death
with no contact to the outside world.

About 30 minutes pass and
Mom gathers the strength to go find her phone.
she comes back with here phone and cigarettes. while telling Dad that a limb fell off the tree,
she was freaking out, scaring us even more.

A trip that would normally take 30 minutes,
Dad made in 10.
When he arrived we inspected the damage.
A crack in the ceiling, a shattered kitchen window.
A nest in the kitchen floor.

When daylight arose we inspected outside.
a hole in the roof, and a part of the fence gone.
The pool in utter chaos.
A 100ft. oak tree laying across the house.
