Gazing At The Stars...

by I Am   Jun 13, 2008

Five minutes till take off and all that could be heard was the roaring of the engine starting up behind her immobile body. She stood firm, feet planted in that one spot, from her own free will, she would not waver.

The sun had already began to fade from the blue evening sky, leaving her in an array of colors, as if from a romance scene remade made over and over again, but this was only a misconception. This one moment repeated in time would always have the same outcome. This wasnt that Black and White movie we grew up to...

She would not let herself cry, with everything she had, she held back the tears that were ripping apart her whole being, each drop hanging on by the thinnest thread. A wind begins to blow between her and the plane, as if the wind itself was telling her, "Just a little longer." So she stands there with both hand curled tightly into fists.

Hope begins to waver, praying that the wind is right; she stands there, waiting for that moment.
That moment in time when the music plays and she can finally let go of all that was carried.

"Ma'am, it's time to go, we cannot wait any longer." She slowly turns to the pilot and looks at him with empty eyes, longing for something that neither him nor time can give, "I know." She says, her voice was as fragile as glass "But please...just a few more minutes."

He walks off, leaving her in the silence of the setting sun. She turns back towards the entrance, waiting for the doors to push open, but nothing happens. Time continues to draw out, every second felt like minutes, every minute felt like hours. Her body begins to tremble with fear. "Maybe it was a lie," she says to herself. "Maybe the wind was wrong"... maybe he really did."

Her voice drops like an anchor. She couldn't bring herself to say the word, without a teardrop falling, and then it came...

Her hands unclenched from the fist that made her knuckles white. Her legs gave in; her feet were no longer planted firmly. As if the earth swayed beneath where she stood, she fell to her knees.

"My lady!!" The pilot yelled out, running to where she now knelt, but she couldn't hear him. Her head hung in defeat: She sees drops of rain as she looks at the ground, not even realizing her own tears as they run down her cheeks. "I was wrong"... The voice of shattered glass... she was broken.

She lifted her head to face the stars in the sky, eyes still filled to the rim and still pouring over with tears. She said no words, made no movements, only did what needed to be done. She let it all go....
