THE BATTLES OF LIFE
#26
AUG 1989

LIFE HAS BEEN FUNNY, LOOKING OUT OF MY SHOES,
SOMETIMES YOU WIN, SOMETIMES YOU LOSE.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON,
THE PATH THAT YOU CHOOSE.
THE FIRST TIME I SNIFFED GLUE, AND DROPPED ACID, I WAS ONLY ELEVEN.
IT WAS A BLAST, A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN.
FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS, IT STEADILY GOT WORSE,
ONE DAY I REALIZED, THIS IS A CURSE.
I TRIED TO ESCAPE,
BUT IT WAS TOO LATE.
FOR THE LIFE THAT I CHOSE,
THIS WAS MY FATE.
AT TWENTY ONE, I HAD THE LUCK OF MY LIFE.
GOD WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO GIVE ME A WIFE.
SHE STUCK BY MY SIDE, THROUGH THICK AND THIN.
FOR YEARS AND YEARS, A TOTAL OF TEN.
SHE DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE,
SHE REALLY HAD TRIED.
BUT LOOKING RIGHT THROUGH ME,
SHE KNEW I HAD DIED.
HER LEAVING IT SEEMS, WAS THE BEST FOR ME,
IT MADE ME DETERMINED TO BECOME DRUG FREE.
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE HER, SHE IS MY BEST FRIEND,
SHE BROUGHT MY DRUG HABIT TO AN END.
I OWE HER MY LIFE, I HOPE TO REPAY,
I PRAY SHE COMES BACK, I LOOK FOR THAT DAY,
SHE GAVE ME SO MUCH, A WILL TO (SURVIVE.)
THANKS TO HER, AGAIN I'M ALIVE.
I WAS A FOOL FOR WAITING SO LONG,
BUT I WAS WEAK, WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN STRONG.
HONEY I LOVE YOU ! PLEASE GIVE ME A CHANCE.
I OWE YOU MUCH MORE THAN LOVE AND ROMANCE.
THINGS CAN BE DIFFERENT NOW,
IF ONLY YOU WILL LET ME SHOW YOU HOW.
I'M NOT THE MAN I USED TO BE,
I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER, BEING DRUG FREE.
WE TOOK A VOW, FOR BETTER, OR WORSE,
YOU'VE HAD THE SECOND, BUT YOU DESERVE THE FIRST.
TEN YEARS YOU'VE WAITED, ASKING ME PLEASE,
NOW I'M BEGGING YOU, DOWN ON MY KNEES.
I KNOW IT'S NOT TIME..I STILL HAVE TO GROW,
BUT WHILE I RECOVER, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T GO.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF (TIME), BEFORE I HEAL,
YOU'VE BEEN THERE TOO..YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL.

WITH ALL OF MY LOVE
YOUR FUTURE HUSBAND , JIM

I wanted to write a comment on this 'pouring out' of yourself but cannot seem to find the right words. Even though 'she knew I had died' you must have found new life and faith because I have read some of your other poems. It is good to remember where we have come from on our journey through life. Thank you for sharing this.

    This is great.
I always love the hyberbole (an obvious exaggeration) in your poems.
    "She knew i had died"
    I feel like that too.
Well i feel like im dying already.
    Im dying inside.
It was also sweet, i think that you should give her this poem if you havent already.
I bet she would love it :)
