Soldiers

by Katie Waring   Jul 2, 2008

A loud noise, a flash of pain
My gun slips from my hand
As I fall to the ground, fall to the end

Like a movie in a theater
My life flashes before me,
I see my wife, my love
At our first high school dance

I gasp for breathe, for life
As I pray for the pain to end
And for no one else to suffer

I see my children, my daughters
I see them grow and change before me
I see their weddings, minus a father to walk with
And I see their sons and daughters
But most of all, I see their lives flash before me
Lives in which I would not partake

An angel appears before me,
Smiling and holding out her hand
I reach out and take it,
Leaving the world of the living
My wife and my children behind
