The Boston Strangler Lives? Part 1©

by Mr. Darcy   Aug 12, 2008

Cafe of contemplation

Swirling the blackness, provoking thought pools;
Contemplating how my life could have been
If my precious childhood had been less cruel,
And not fixed to the bust of Satan's queen.
Deeply I inhale the coffee's bouquet,
Allowing it to trigger the darkness:
Memories of chicory and ashtrays
And mother's words - such evil spitefulness!
"You useless bastard runt, you disgust me!"
Everyday of my life this filth has churned
Shaping and twisting my reality,
Until the hatred inside boiled and burned
Eating life and choking morality;
Sickening my mind for insanity!

Some background on the story of The Boston Strangler.... My Sonnet series is about the real Boston Strangler (if he exsists) in the present day, now he would be an old man, maybe 60 or 70 ish? The murders of twelve (or so) woman, many of them older woman, mother figures perhaps? These murders happened in the early 1960's over the period of 18 months!! My story has him now living in London, having moved away some 30 years ago to escape the hype!

DeSalvo was sentenced to life in prison for the other non-Strangler crimes. In 1973 he was stabbed in the heart and died of his wounds. During his stay in prison, he did retract his confession. He was also said, to have been an informer for the prison authorities.

Before he was murdered he wrote this poem:

Here is the story of the Strangler, yet untold,

The man who claims he murdered thirteen women,

young and old.

The elusive Strangler, there he goes,

Where his wanderlust sends him, no one knows

He struck within the light of day,

Leaving not one clue astray.

Young and old, their lips are sealed,

Their secret of death never revealed.

Even though he is sick in mind,

Hes much too clever for the police to find.

To reveal his secret will bring him fame,

But burden his family with unwanted shame.

Today he sits in a prison cell,

Deep inside only a secret he can tell.

People everywhere are still in doubt,

Is the Strangler in prison or roaming about?

Any and all of the above information was obtained from the web, books and articles. In 2001 DeSalvo was exhumed and DNA testing was done, to see if he was the murderer of the last Strangler Victim. The Forensic Scientist virtually ruled out the evidence obtained from those found on the last victim. As for the other 12, if the same evidence was available, how many would point to DeSalvo as the only Strangler?

The last 3 lines in the poem, are what reach out and slap you as they read them. Secret he can tell.....or roaming about.

I for one am quick to mistrust. If he was ruled out on one that he confessed to, why not the others? In the confession, he got the descriptions of the last 2 wrong, but yet still confessed to them? Was there more then one killer? Was there copycat killers? Was DeSalvo a wannabee? My question, what if the killings didn't stop, after DeSalvo confessed?

I think you have done a good job to gather so much information. I think this first sonnet succeed to capture reader's interests. Specially the ones who happen to like a little but darkish poems if you know what I mean... ;)

I am glad some of us have the patient for writing like this.

    You rock, Michael! :D
