Heart on Fire

by Just Sierra   Sep 22, 2008

With those words, my world reversed
Within your voice, I felt my body slide
You told me you no longer loved me so
I could've sworn a part of me died.

You viciously rained on me ash and fire
With no escape or means to heal
So long, I wished with every bit of me
That one day soon I couldn't feel.

The clock would tick again and again
Time became a building flame
Again and again, I'd listened and count
But time still stayed the same.

It played inside my head all night, every night
A broken record, I couldn't ignore-
Your voice, your face, the way you said
You couldn't love me anymore.

If you asked me to describe to you
What it felt like to hear those words
I'd tell you it was the deepest circle of hell,
The pain was unbearable and worse.

I'd tell you that it was ethereal to me
Something outside everything I've known.
It was a searing, ripping, dreadful feeling
That electrocuted me to the bone.

Now hearts are not made of paper
Therefore, I know they cannot break
But this pain, echoing within my soul,
I feel every moment that I'm awake.

While you're loving on this new girl,
Your personal paragon of youth,
I lay in bed, weak and tired of crying
Because I just can't accept the truth.

It hurts to carry this burden, my pain,
Hurts that time won't pick up pace
But I know, I hope, I pray that soon
God will let me forget your face

Wow, Sierra, what an amazing piece, almost brought me to tears. I can feel the agonizing pain in every word. It is so sincere, vivid, powerful, ... just heartbreaking. The cadence was practically flawless, and the images/emotions portrayed were as well. Love the vocabulary used quite a bit; ethereal is one of my favorite words. My two absolute favorite stanzas were these:

"It played inside my head all night, every night
    A broken record, I couldn't ignore-
Your voice, your face, the way you said
    You couldn't love me anymore."

That just stung me -- I know that I have been jilted and felt like this before, and it truly is like a broken record: rubbing you raw with repetition until you can't stand it anymore.

"Now hearts are not made of paper
Therefore, I know they cannot break
But this pain, echoing within my soul,
I feel every moment that I'm awake."

Hearts may be unbreakable, but they sure can stretch paper thin sometimes from all the wear.

Splendid poem, loved it a bunch!
    Keep writing down the bones,
