Parents' Arguments

by Tonk   Nov 23, 2008

Sitting at the table
You've got one on each side
Both raising their voices
Getting louder each time

Again you got it wrong
Girl you're such a failure

Tears running down your face
As they merge with your snot
Dripping into your soup
Making puddles of gunk
You drink it anyway
Too far beyond caring

Head down, eyes on your bowl
Trying to block them out
You sit and think of him

...

On a wish's white wing
Your cold mind rides you back
To those days painted with
Flowers, rainbows and stars

With your hand held in his
Together you run out
Into the crystal rain
The fine smile on your face
Is held warm inside you
As you dance in droplets
Of loves' pure heavenly
Bliss.

...

"BUT YOU DIDN'T DO THIS"
"AND YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT"

In an instant you're back
Snatched by reality
Mum's angry voice screeching
Dad's fuming eyes staring

You've screwed up yet again
Another thing done wrong
But who gives a toss now

...

Memories make you want
To hear those soothing words
Sung softly in your ear
Reassuring your heart
Knowing at least he cares
Everything is just fine
When you're held in his arms

...

Reality again
It thumps you in the chest
Takes an extra stab too
Right in your lonely heart

Parents are still at it
You sit and take their blows
Too tired to argue back

You know it should stop soon
It has been going on
For a very long time
And eventually
They will run out of words
Or perhaps all these tears
Will make them both shut up
You sit and wait, and wait

...

Again your thoughts wander
But this time the present
Has come to haunt your mind
Remember what he's done

He walks his road alone
You've lost him now, he's gone
Girl there will be no hug
His arms won't heal your pain
There'll be no kiss for you
His lips won't make you smile

Today you handle this
Completely
Alone.
