My Daddy's Ode

Daddy.
What is the true meaning of the word?
Bravery, courage? Strength?
Most people seem to think just that
But how could you put one word to describe one man?

Love, truth, guidance
My true hero
His hour long lectures would bore me
But there were words of wisdom
Thinking, "I want to be just like him"
He smiles and calls me "his Belle"
While he plays a familiar melody
It's our song
"Daddy, don't you know? Daddy, don't you know?
You're the only man in my heart?"
I sing

He cries to think of his little girl grown
But knows to give me wings to leave his nest
Does he know I'll always return?
I still climb in his lap feeling little again
When a day gone wrong somehow grows worse

My daddy who works from dawn to dusk
Under the earth with a hard hat and stripes
He works too much to make sure I'm content
Though he is still never too busy
And his problems never too big
To say the right words when I need him most

I write this poem to show my appreciation
For all the love he has shown over the years
For all the hugs and kisses
And saying "I love you" too often
I now realize it isn't often enough

Anyone can be a father
But it takes someone special
To be called daddy
My daddy.
