A Little Piece of a Dream

by DistantKisses   Apr 20, 2009

She sat on the porch, head tilted down.
The rain was cold on her exposed skin.
Her hair was damp, sticking to her cheeks.
Her heart weeping with the rain.

Hands were shaking as she rubbed them together.
Ice against ice is all she could feel.

Hope draining from her eyes.
She tried with all her might,
To look to the sky.
A simple glimpse was what she needed.

Her breath came out in small huffs.
Dancing in front of her dull eyes.

Somewhere a crack broke her silent thoughts.
Eyes fluttering to her left.
They stopped short.
Bitter eyes glowered back.

The girl's heart skipped a beat.
As she quickly rose to her feet.

Fiddling with the keys in her pocket.
She tried quickly to unlock the door.
Her hands were shaking uncontrollably.
Heart pounding so fast it was hard to breathe.

A small movement, and the creature emerged.
Slick black fur glistened with rain.

The keys fell from her numb fingers.
A small clank on the concrete.
Eyes wide with wonder.
Cautious as can be.

The creature moved closer now.
Quick like lightening.

She took a deep breath
And waited for the fangs.
But no pain had come.
Just small jingle in the night.

The wolf before her held up her keys.
Eyes soft like cotton.

Cautiously, the girl took them back.
Her fingers tingling from the warmth of his breath.
She unlocked her door.
And took a step in.

Peeking back out.
Her heart did sink.

For the wolf of the night.
Had evaporated with the slowing rain.
But in her heart.
He did leave.

A little piece of a dream.
