Mourning

by Christy   Apr 24, 2009

The bereaved widow,
freshly devastated,
climbs out of the
hearse.
A large, decorative hat,
a 30-something birthday gift
from her late husband,
sits tilted and elegant
like a crown on her head.
She dabs her face with
a handkerchief
and tucks it back into
her expensive handbag,
then proceeds into the cemetery.
Upon arrival at the burial site,
she basks in the sheer
number of people that have come
to grieve her loss.
Her eyes fall upon a
particular man
with a beautiful suit
and gentle blue eyes that
send his condolences.
She gives him a pouted nod
and then,
ever so discreetly,
shortens her skirt
about four inches.
