Six Words

by Melody   Jul 13, 2009

Six words never did more than these
"I'm going to join the army."
Six words stronger than fists.
They broke my heart,
Tore my life apart.
My world changed before my very eyes
When he spoke those words.
I remembered that wall,
That great wall with countless names carved in it.
Names of lost soldiers from a war not long ago.
He could join their ranks one day,
The ranks of the KIA,
Join the ones passed, never to return.
Or he could return to me, changed in many ways,
Not the man he used to be.
Fear holds me in its clutches,
Worry surrounds me.
Tears fill my days,
While nightmares fill my nights.
My world will never be the same
Since the day it was changed by those
Six words
