Worth the fight

by Julie   Jul 30, 2009

When I was younger
I lost a loved one of mine
And I stood staring out the window
At the starry sky
Mommy came up behind me
Hugged me real tight
Then she leaned and whispered
Love is always worth the fight

When I was in high school
I fell in love with a boy
I thought he was my prince charming
But it turned out to be a ploy
I was crying in my prom dress
A tiara upon my head
And as I stood in the empty hallway
I remembered what mommy said

The boy who had once taken my heart
and ripped it in two
Came to me and loved me
Turned my gray skies blue

On the day of our wedding
I looked into the eyes of the man I loved
Feeling loved, blessed, and cherished
I took his hand into mine
And as the preacher said
To seal our marriage with a kiss
The man I loved leaned over and whispered
Was it worth the fight?
And I looked at my mommy
The woman who taught me all
And if there is one thing she taught me
That would take place over all
It is the simple answer
My husband and I can recall
I leaned over
Very slowly to fill him with angst
And as my heart recovered
I replied simple and chaste
Always
Nothing more
Nothing less
A simple answer
That will always remain the same
Love IS worth the fight
Just like Mommy used to say
