Looking in a mirror

She strolls down the sidewalk, deep in thought,
wondering if what her teacher, said was true.
If you looked in a mirror, and you focused a lot,
you will see what is inside of you.

She kicks a rock, as she stumbles to her home
uncertain of her teachers beliefs
"How about I try it? I can give it a go!"
she smiled with spirit and relief

She came to her apartment, and took off her shoes
and saw how tattered they were
But she couldn't complain, for what could she do?
her family had no money for her

She continued her walk, going down the hall
and saw what a mess, the place was in
Her mother was ill, and couldn't stand tall
and they couldn't afford medicine

Her mommy was sleeping on the couch,
so she pulled a blanket over her head
accidentally she dropped something, and slowly crouched down
to pick up her family's portrait

Herself, and her mother grinning their grins
with a man at her mommy's side
Her father she called him, when she was a little kid
was ill and unfortunately died

She remembered her mission and put the photo down
steadily walking to her washroom mirror
she took a breath, looking face down
hoping to soon see herself clearer

So she looked up at the mirror and all she could see
was her reflection of a smile
but slowly she realized with much glee
that her grin, was really worthwhile

Even though this girl had nothing,
she was truly happy to be
though life's caused her troubles, and she was unlucky
She was glad to say "I'm me."
