Sleeping Alone

by Daniel Rutter   Feb 10, 2010

You lay in bed at night,
Reach across the bed,
Searching for a sign that you're not alone,
Crying yourself to sleep.

You think of people in your past,
The lovers you shared your bed with,
You long for the memory of arms around you,
To become a reality.

When you finally go to sleep,
Arms around your pillow,
You dream of love and the future,
You dream that you'll never be alone again.

When you wake,
And look across the bed,
You find it empty and your heart sinks low,
But you know that the search will be over soon.

Because somewhere out there,
Someone is as lonely as you,
Someone who pines for your love,
Who will hold you when you sleep.

And when you wake,
You will wake to their beautiful face,
Smile as they do,
And close your eyes and thank god for this gift.
