Footprints in the Sand

by QuietDreamer   Dec 29, 2010

Grains of sand slip in between
sun-cracked toes--
Submerging them with every step,
Clings like a newborn to tired feet

A great distance I have been,
Through thick and thin I've walked
Along your footprints-- so
We'd be together at the end

You lifted up a spindly twig,
And drew a line through the sand.
A line between us
That won't be swept away.

So you walk on and I stay put.
The tide cleans away your footprints,
Until there is no trace of you, except
the footprints you left upon my heart.

Whether you return or not I can't decide
but I will wait, and rest eternal in the sand
For the day I can awake and
The line you drew will be erased.
