His Heart Against Hers

by Carolyn Falls   Mar 14, 2011

Her birthday,
intimate conversation,
a meal to be savored.
But he can tell by the look in her eyes,
this is not what she favored.

An evening drive
A small, shiny box in his pocket,
out amongst the trees he parks.
She smiles like a child,
but he had expected sparks.

Now it's night, her birthday almost over.
He wanted this day to be special,
so he will not be deterred
She whispers, "Baby, it's exactly what I wanted"
When he presses his heart against hers.
