They Masquerade As Humans

by francis x reilly   May 17, 2011

It seems peculiar, even to me,
that I sometimes develop a quaint affection
for certain non-entities who play leading roles
in dreams produced and orchestrated
by my subconscious.

Within the framework of a significant dream,
these "characters" remain nameless,
and are nothing more than just faces and bodies
composed of pseudo-protoplasmic dream essence.

They are capable of facial animation,
articulation of speech,
and posturing of every type and description.
Clearly, it is their human-like qualities
together with some grotesque ritual of seduction
that lures me to them.

Fraudulently misrepresenting themselves as "real"
in particularly vivid dreams, these non-entities
masquerade as humans-but they are not...
and can NEVER be.
They are not alive-they are not dead-
they simply...are not.
