How to Care

by ntv650   Nov 14, 2011

We are no longer homesick for the places we have been.
For the moments of disappointment and the dark corners
Where we found small victories.
Back when happiness seemed infinite,
When they were but a nervous smile on a face
That fell into a familiarity effortlessly embraced.

The notions of physical affection devoid of emotion
Unimaginable when confronted with a kiss
That made eyes close, in beautiful weakness.

Empty now, save for turmoil that drags
And weans the light from inside us.
Words proffered from the past becoming
Expansive, evolving and repeating In the now,
Until creaking under a weight of uncertainties
They snap.

To indulge in it all, so as not to overwhelm.
Letting the tugs and thrusts of life distract;
Work. Pastimes. They are but alibis
And unable to outweigh the end product
Of the person that they have shaped.
Our ability as human beings to care
Becomes, with mathematical precision,
Something greater than the sum of its parts.
