The Hunt

by Lofallenve   Dec 22, 2011

I discovered it in leaps and bounds,
My paws scoured the earth in anonymous speed.
The dirt my claws tossed up, dusted my ashy fur.
My playful mood, the imaginary prey I was focused,
Quickly switched to real life prowling,
When it came darting out of its hiding place.
Terror reflected in its minor eyes,
Fear gave it the adrenaline it needs to flee.
Nothing but the thrill of chase matters now.
Swift as the wind that strokes my fur,
As the predator I was born to be,
I'm after my prey, hunger leading me.
The earth holds stiff to my pursuit,
My paws, as I run, barely touch the terrain.
Like the eagle I've found myself admiring,
I feel like I'm flying, with such speed I travel.
The forest disappears as it is left behind me.
The environment that raised me is blurred.
The prey that is soon slowing is my main focus.
I can run for as long as need be, I can catch this thing.
The saliva is building, as I imagine the taste in my jaw.
My imagination runs wild, blood spills on the ground
Adding color to my ashen muzzle, filling my stomach.
My prey is slowing, I can sense the fear.
Its bounding legs are tiring, it doesn't want to give up.
It is inevitable, it is mine.
My moment has come, I lunge.
The last breath it had, it used it to squeal.
Its life force is warm in my mouth, delicious in my jaws
I quickly tear it apart, devouring it almost whole.
This rabbit will suffice for the rest of the day.
Its auburn fur is what I leave for the scavengers.
Content with the success of my hunt,
I lift my canine head, serenading the moon of my feat.

I would only suggest two things. Break this into stanza's and if you do, don't start every word with a capital letter. It just helps the reader read it a little easier.

Other than that awesome descriptions. I liekd your word choice in this most definitely. I also think The Hunt is a perfect simple title that really just only those 2 words are all you need to desribe this poem.

A vivid image of a Cheetah on the hunt played out the scene in my mind. Your writing in the mind of a cat works very well in this write. Excellent
