This is not home yet

You beat your older sister to the front door and turn the handle
This house is glowing
You can't seem to find any dust bunnies to befriend
The emptiness and smell of a fresh paint coat are alien to you
It terrifies you
Yet you keep walking
In what looks like a kitchen you feel smaller then ever
The movers are bringing in the table and you are forced against a wall
The cabinets are out of your reach and you search for your sesame street stepping stool, its not there
You open every door you see
Closet after closet until finally you find another room
It's also empty and very small
Your dad enters and calls it his study
He shows you the stairs that lead upstairs
These stairs are much steeper than at the old house
At the top your mom lifts you up in her arms and says "welcome home"
You stare at her as if asking where all your stuff is
Home has blankets and teddy bears
This place has white walls and little furniture
When she puts you down she kneels and points to a door to your right
Your new bedroom
The movers placed a mattress on the floor but what looks like pieces of your bed is a pile near the wall with the big window
You drop your
Backpack on the floor and walk to the window
You begin to wish you had said no when mom and dad asked if you wanted to come here
This is not home
There is no bed
No lamp
No comfort
You trudge down the stairs and find your father
When you see him you run
You hug his leg and start to cry
He squats in front of you and wipes your tears away
When you explain why you are sad he tells you it will be home soon
The movers will bring in the rest of your home
You smile as he lifts you into his arms and leads you around the rest of your new home
