He believe marriage is one of America's greatest social problems. The abnormal development of society creates abnormal lives. Much like Joe's marriage, his wife told him she was unable to join Joe in new York due to the climate adjustment. She said her dog will not be able to adjust. This unusual reason for husband and wife living separately made him doubly aware that He had entered a different world. While taking a bath, He again thought of offering himself. Should He take advantage of Joe's absence?
Mulling it over, he carefully lathered every part of his body, almost to the point of caressing himself. Cast off by women he loved or, rather, having cast them off, all that he had left was himself. Involuntarily he thought of his wife, sleeping on the other side of the globe... Would her dreams give her any idea that her husband was dissolute?
She could not understand a man so often close to death.
After the bath he felt as pure as a baby, and begun to hum a tune. The next moment he was feeling that the world was beautiful and that he had to love everybody in it. By the time he lifted his razor he had stopped humming the tune... The sharp blade seemed to sound an alarm. He realized he was humming an old sea shanty ...
