Farewell to Roses

by MyHalozChokinMe   Oct 26, 2012

I was never fond of roses anyway;
so pretentious in their beauty.

They embody the lies told by men who
cannot find the words to say what they
really mean.

Cut in their prime, they fade altogether
too soon, transient and fickle flower beauty
born on thorns.

Knowing that from you I shall never
receive roses somehow enhances rather
than detracts.

You are not so weepy, emotional,
over-sentimental but rather honest in
action and in form.

Your thorns are in full view, all the more
beautiful for their lack of camoflauge
and cloying perfumes.

My appreciation for your honesty, your
strength in it, at times pain, pleasure both
authentic and true to life.

I will accept it all, in fact, embrace it actively,
wholeheartedly and nary a blink or a nod.

I will be happy to say, forever, farewell to roses.

I can definitely respect and appreciate the message. Honesty and realism over flash and fairytale. Although I will say(and not just because i'm a flowers kinda guy :))that sometimes it's about what you can't find words for, but what you simply can't say. I'm quite notorious for getting tongue tied and overwhelmed by beautiful souls :)

But that's just my opinion of course. I did enjoy the honesty of this piece.

Maple is rightm definatly a love poem.

They embody the lies told by men who
cannot find the words to say what they
    really mean

    - this is so true and it is something that not many people think of when they see someone recieving flowers. I mean if you think of films, 9/10 of the women who recieve roses is because their partners have done something wrong and they think they either won't be found out if they buy her roses, or they have been found out but roses will make it all ok anyway. So demeaning!

I like how you took flowers and wrote about them in the opposite way from which I normally read about in poems. You are seeing what they could represent to someone who see's them in a different light, one of sadness, guilt, shame, excuses.

    I like this part :

Your thorns are in full view, all the more
beautiful for their lack of camoflauge
    and cloying perfumes.

    - everyone has these thorns in them and no one is perfect, but it is those who try to hide it and cover it up that then end up hurting people because we get hurt by what we never saw. At least if we see them, we know they are there and we chose to accept them and learn to love them. It reminds me of the flaws poetry we attempted.

Honesty is so important in relationships of any kind. What you see is what you get - then you can never really go wrong becaus there is no secrets or lies to uncover.

    Great poem.

Hmm. Your husband seems sweet :P

I myself, like lilies and foxgloves. (I mean, IF, I gave a rat's ass about flowers!)

And, I was undecided on where to place this piece.

    Thank you Andrea.
