A Promise Made

by Poetess41   Jan 21, 2013

"I promise I'll be back" he said "when this deployment's done"
I said "why are you fighting for a war that can't be won?"
He said, "when I return the memories of it will fade;
Just keep the faith and I will keep the promise that I made"

He said "I'll try my best to send a letter every day;
I may not always do it but I'll try in every way;
but just in case there is a gap don't ever be afraid"
As we made love I whispered "you just keep that promise made"

True to his word his letters came quite often at the start
The words from every single one are etched upon my heart
When there were gaps I just believed the mail had been delayed
And clung with all my passion to the promise that was made

A few months after he had gone I visited my doc
And got the news that I was pregnant, such a lovely shock!
I knew the exact moment that this destiny was laid
It was that magic evening of the promise that was made

I couldn't wait to tell him so I wrote to him that night
I knew that when he read it he'd be radiant with delight
I never believed that anything could rain on my parade
Sent this one with a kiss and thought about the promise made

The only letter after that informed me he had died
Delivered personally to me, I read it and I cried
He's left a gap but I will never, ever be afraid
and when our son is born he will have kept that promise made.
